Plaque induced gingivitis is a form of gingivitis that can cause damage to teeth and gums. As a result, after being cured through healthy oral routines, the patient may need an orthodontist to get their teeth and gum to look healthy and presentable again. Depending on the degree of damage, this will require the use of fixed and removable appliances common to orthodontics.

Causes: Plaque-Induced Gingivitis is caused when a patient neglects to maintain good oral hygiene. In the absence of brushing, flossing, and washing your mouth after every meal, food deposits will remain between your teeth and gums. These will get infected with bacteria, forming plaque. Plaque formed around gum margins (or gingival margins) can lead to gingivitis.

Effects: The side-effects of plaque-induced gingivitis include bleeding gums and gums getting separated from the teeth. It can also cause swelling of gums. In some cases, your teeth could become loose, This in turn may cause you teeth to not fit together properly when you bite and chew. Other effects include partial dentures that not longer fit together and pus formation between gums.

Treatment: As you can see, plaque-induced gingivitis can cause a number of teeth and gum deformations. These will remain even after the infection is cleared. For this reason, patients of this condition are often referred to orthodontists. They, in turn, will repair these defects through the use of various orthodontic tools, appliances, and procedures. These will push the patient’s teeth back into the right positions and cause their gums to fit firmly around them again.

Your Las Vegas orthodontist can tell you whether you need treatment, and if you see plaque building around your teeth, don’t forget to pay a visit!
