Causes: Periodontitis is one of the most common forms of diseases and is caused by the periodontal bacteria. These bacteria also exist in healthy mouths and are a danger to oral health only when their numbers dramatically increase. This is usually cause by debris left if the mouth which become a breeding ground for the bacteria.

Having crooked teeth (or any similar hard-to-reach places for you toothbrush) can increase your chances of contracting this disease.

Once the bacteria have started to thrive, they will release harmful byproducts and cause an inflammatory response from your gums. This can lead to bleeding, swollen gums and damaged, discolored teeth.

Effects: Periodontitis starts with gingivitis. The symptoms at this initial level include visible plaque (food and debris deposits), bleeding while brushing, swollen gums, and general inflammation.

At later stages, this gingivitis will develop into Periodontitis. Now, the elevated symptoms would include changes in the positioning of the teeth in the jaws, lengthening of the teeth (gum recession) and pain.

However, early signs of periodontitis can be detected during routine examinations, especially through the use of the ‘Periodontal Screening Index’.

Treatment by Las Vegas Orthodontists: In cases where there is loss of teeth and damage to surrounding bones, the orthodontic practice of using space maintainers may need to be employed.

For misalignments undergone by teeth, braces can used. For adults, clear braces are available which will be less noticeable. Similarly, aligners can also be used to apply pressure on teeth in such a way that they would be nudged back into their proper positions.

Other treatments include professional cleaning procedures and corrective surgical measures. Aftercare supportive therapy may also be needed in some cases. Your Las Vegas orthodontist will be able to help you with proper treatment.
